AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner

How can we help make these standards dynamic so that students can use them to further their own learning and mastery of essential skills and attitudes? School librarians, use these ideas to aid you in helping students achieve the standards. See the standards in their original format AASL standards in pdf, or in html format AASL standards on the St. Andrew's Library Website, formatted with permission of AASL. A task force is currently "developing a document to expand and support the new learning standards with indicators, benchmarks, model examples, and assessments.” Find this document-in-progress at AASL standards in Action. Edit these pages by adding links, explanations, definitions, ideas for using Web 2.0 or other tools, or anything that will connect students to the standards. Let's make this document dynamic so that we will all implement it for our students through our LM programs. Password: learner

The initial strategies were suggested by 26 librarians in a very short session during the Hill Country Librarian's Conference in Austin on Feb. 15, 2008. We addressed the following questions:

1. What does the Standards Language actually mean? How do we explain each?

2. How can we Apply the Standards throughout the grade levels?

3. What Strategies can we use to help students master the standards? What strategies can students employ to master each standard?

4. How can we Integrate the standards into content area curriculum?

5. How do we Assess the standards?

6. In other words, what can I do in my Collaborative Role with teaching and learning that results in students mastering each standard? What does it look like?

Consider having a work session with your colleagues and make suggestions that will help us all to integrate the standards.
